St Andrew’s Toowoomba Hospital warmly welcomes Dr Vimal Varkey into private practice, onsite at Focus On Mind Psychiatry. Dr Varkey joins Dr Manohar Pai and Dr Sumit Sharma, further strengthening St Andrew’s Toowoomba Hospital’s onsite Mental Health service capacity.
Dr Vimal Varkey is a Senior Psychiatrist specialising in General Adult Psychiatry with a special interest in addiction psychiatry, mood disorders, anxiety disorders and ADHD.
Dr Varkey completed MD Psychiatry and DPM in India before relocating to Australia in 2012. He has subsequently attained FRANZCP (Fellow of The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists) in 2014, Certificate of Advanced Training in Addiction Psychiatry in 2020 and Master of Health Leadership and Management (UNSW) in 2022.
In addition to his extensive clinical experience in acute care, forensic, addiction and rehabilitation psychiatry, Dr Varkey has held many senior positions and is the Clinical Director of Regional Services Mental Health, Darling Downs Health Service since 2018. Dr Varkey has acted in higher leadership roles for the Toowoomba Hospital as the Acting Director of Medical Services and Acting Director of Governance.
Dr Varkey is a senior lecturer for the University of Queensland Rural Clinical School and is an accredited supervisor for trainee registrars with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists. Dr Varkey has worked as a staff specialist with Gold Coast Health Service, prior to relocating to Toowoomba.
St Andrew’s Private Mental Health Unit is suitably equipped with modern facilities and patients are provided with the highest level of evidence based, recovery focused care and treatment for adults. SATH has the only private mental health unit in the Darling Downs offering a choice of inpatient or outpatient rTMS, Esketamine or ECT for treatment of severe depression. Additionally, the St Andrew’s Hospital Psychology Clinic offers a range of outpatient day programs and group-based therapy programs aimed at improving an individual’s quality of life and recovery from mental health concerns. These programs are run throughout the year and are staffed by experienced psychologists, social workers, and mental health nurses.
