Ray has been employed in both public and private health systems for the past 35 years.

Prior to moving to Toowoomba as the Chief Executive Officer at St Andrew's Toowoomba Hospital, Ray was the Chief Executive Officer of Macquarie Area Health Service in Central–Western NSW which comprised 16 public hospitals, 1,500 staff and an annual budget of $100 million.

Ray holds tertiary qualifications in health service management and fellowships to a number of professional and management associations.
